Astro Boy Hits the Silver Screen

Astro Boy: Up, Up and Away!

As long-time readers might remember of my review of TMNT (that’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the uninitiated), I was impressed with Imagi’s visual sense and how they rendered some of the toughest elements of CGI on the big screen. Imagi seems to have continued with that aspect with the Astro Boy poster, which depicts our little hero doing some serious damage to the environment, merely by blasting off.

You gotta love the little guy’s stance, ready and willing to stand up for justice and prod some buttock (yeah, yeah, this is a PG-rated site). It’s a great little image, darker than the original vision of Astro Boy, but not as dark as the other image I’ve used before (which can be seen below). You can see the entire image by clicking here.

Unfortunately, I’m less stoked with the talent behind the camera. Colin Brady, who helmed the execrable Everyone’s Hero is directing this flick, which will be produced by Maryann Garger, who produced the Aardman/DreamWorks bomb Flushed Away.

Pilar Flynn (First Flight) is the associate producer while Michael Lachance (The Madagascar Penguins in: A Christmas Caper, Over the Hedge) is writing the script.

Like I’ve said before, Imagi is treading on some seriously hallowed ground here by adapting Osamu Tezuka’s 1951 manga for the silver screen. Astro Boy was one of the first, and still one of the most popular, mangas and animes ever created, and Imagi is in for a world of hurtin’ if they don’t give it the respect it deserves.

Here’s the synopsis for the flick: “Astro Boy tells the story of a powerful robot boy created by a brilliant scientist in the image of the son he has lost. Our hero journeys to find acceptance in the human world, and ultimately discovers true friendship as he uses his incredible powers to help others and save Metro City from destruction.”

Not a lot of information there, but hopefully we’ll get a better idea as to what’s going on as the release date gets closer (or when we actually *get* a release date). As with their other classic anime property Gatchaman, Imagi is going with an “origins” tale with their take on the little robot boy. READ MORE…

The Sarah Connor Chronicles: A New TV Spin on Terminator

sarahconnorchron.jpg

After 25 years of existing as a film franchise, this month the blockbuster Terminator mythology transitions to, of all places, the small screen in the new Fox series, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (premiering Jan. 13 at 8:00 pm and concluding Jan. 14 at 9:00 pm). Starring Lena Headey as Sarah Connor and Thomas Dekker as humanity’s future savior John Connor, the series puts its own spin on the post-apocalyptic, time-travel storyline created by James Cameron.

But the big question that faces this new incarnation is whether you can successfully take a billion dollar franchise, that over the course of its history literally changed the way Hollywood creates and features visual effects, and scale it down to the scope and budget of television? If you ask Jim Lima, the show’s visual effects supervisor, the answer in unequivocally “Yes!”

For the last 15 years as a designer and vfx supervisor (Spider-Man, Strange Days and Taken), Lima has been learning his craft alongside such mentors as Cameron and Steven Spielbeg. Lima suggests Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is the latest example of how artistry and technology are bridging what once was a chasm between film and television. “The interesting thing is that TV always uses the analogy that it’s more character driven,” Lima explains. “To a certain extent that is true, but what James Cameron wrote were character driven films. Josh Friedman [exec producer and screenwriter for T:SCC], took what worked brilliantly in the [film] franchise, which is this very strong character driven story, a modern mythology, if you will. And when you think of the Terminator, there are certain iconic elements and it has this ubiquitous energy to it so that people immediately identify READ MORE…

Shingonishinari in the Hood!

•January 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Last week was an interesting experience to say the least as I had a chance to see Shingonishinari doing his thing in Nishinari Triangle Park. Shingonishinari, is definitely and upcoming talent in the Osaka hip hop scene. Now you can add humantarian to his list of credits. Every year Shingonishinari hosts a free live outdoor concert for the people of the Nishinari district to entertain and inspire. Nisihinari is probably the poorest area of Osaka, dubbed the official “Ghetto” of our beloved city.
